Following an international search, Chancellor Justin Schwartz has appointed Andrew Mayock vice chancellor for sustainability, effective March 10. The newly created position will be charged with positioning ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ as a national and global sustainability leader.

NASA’s next major astrophysics mission, a space telescope known as the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HabWorlds), will be a significant step forward in the search for life across the universe, but it’s certainly not the first. LASP has been exploring exoplanets for decades through these five missions.

We sat down with Bryn Rees, associate vice chancellor for innovation and partnerships, to discuss the new Innovation & Partnerships team.

Kian Lopez first became interested in water purification while doing an internship as an undergraduate in Amann, Jordan. “That’s where I learned about wastewater reuse and using gray or reclaimed water to grow agriculture in a very water scarce region,” said Lopez, a NASA graduate research fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. “It’s what got me on this path.”

A team of physicists and engineers at the ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ has discovered a new way to measure the orientation of magnetic fields using what may be the tiniest compasses around—atoms. The group’s findings could one day lead to a host of new quantum sensors.

From July 2023 to June 2024, ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ helped to launch 35 new companies based on research at the university—a big tick up from the previous record of 20 companies in fiscal year 2021. The new businesses are embracing technologies from the worlds of healthcare, agriculture, clean energy and more.

In collaboration with Siemens Digital Industries Software, ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ is offering a new graduate certificate in Design for the Circular Economy. As businesses, governments and nonprofits increasingly focus on redesigning products to be more resource-efficient, demand for professionals with related expertise is surging.
