Policies & Procedure

The Paleontology Section at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is responsible for acquiring, documenting, and preserving paleontological specimens for use in research, teaching, exhibits, and community outreach. A comprehensive collections management policy guides the Paleontology Section in areas such as acquisition, accessioning, cataloging, preparation and conservation, loans, deaccessioning, and the appropriate use of specimens. The collection management policy also defines the professional standards and ethical responsibilities expected of all Paleontology Section members, including faculty, staff, students, postdocs, and volunteers. Most of these policies are summarized here.

Purpose of the UCM Paleontology Collections

The purpose of the Paleontology Section’s collections is to support the mission of the Museum, as well as the research and educational goals of the Paleontology Section. While collection efforts primarily focus on the Rocky Mountain region, select specimens represent broader or global coverage to facilitate the study of evolutionary relationships and several aspects of paleobiology. All specimens are curated according to current museum best practices to ensure their long-term availability for research, teaching, exhibitions, and community outreach. Specimen and their associated data are maintained in a database, providing accurate, up-to-date information on each specimen’s provenance, condition, and status.
