Student Awards
Students from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering earned half of the 24 total undergraduate awards offered by the College of Engineering and Applied Science this semester.
The Colorado Engineering Council selected Jenna Nielson, a senior majoring in chemical and biological engineering, as this year’s Silver Medal Award recipient. The Silver Medal Award is one of the highest honors an engineering student in Colorado can receive. Nielson also earned an Academic Engagement Award this semester.
Cyrus Haas is the Outstanding Undergraduate of the College for the 2021-2022 academic year and a recipient of a Research Award for his work with the Whitehead Research Group.
Filipe Henrique is this year’s recipient of the Dwight E. and Jessie D. Ryland Endowed Graduate Fellowship from the College of Engineering and Applied Science. This fellowship provides $10,000 over two years to a deserving first-year PhD student working in alternative energy or improved energy utilization and efficiency.
Damilola Akinneye, a PhD candidate in the Medlin Group, recently received the Andzik Scholarship, an award that goes to first-generation students or those who have faced unusual adversity, with a preference for those who graduated from a high school in Africa. Akinneye is originally from Nigeria.
Todd Whittaker, a first year graduate student in the Holewinski and Musgrave groups, is the recipient of the 2021 Australia to USA AAA – Northrop Grumman Corporation Scholarship. The scholarship provides financial assistance and networking resources for Australian students studying in STEM fields in the U.S.
Members of the Boulder Alt. Protein Project are the recipients of two awards for their research and community impact in the field of cellular agriculture, which may one day revolutionize how meat is produced for human consumption.
For Emerson Grey of the Bryant Research Group, sustainability and research go hand in hand. His dedication to making the lab go “green” earned him a CU Green Labs Program Award for Individual Achievement this semester.
Montana Minnis, a second-year graduate student co-advised by Professor Ryan Hayward and Assistant Professor C. Wyatt Shields IV, was selected for the 2021 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program. This prestigious fellowship provides mentoring and financial support to students working in science and engineering fields of military interest.
Todd Whittaker, a first-year PhD candidate in the Holewinski and Musgrave groups, is the Graduate and Professional Student Government Outstanding Research Assistant Award winner for 2021.
