Education
- Senior design team Urchin Merchants, who placed fourth, hope to market a specialized suction device to divers and conservation groups that could help save kelp forests off the coast of California and ecosystems around the world from exploding purple sea urchin populations.
- The Early Engineering Exposure Fair, organized by mechanical engineering graduate students, was comprised of 16 interactive exhibits to demonstrate diverse engineering fields such as air quality, wind energy, robotics and microfluids.
- Bio-inspired robotics is the interface of biology and engineering – motivating the development of technology from artificial muscles and medical devices to gecko-inspired adhesives and robots that run, fly and swim. MCEN 4228/5228: Bio-inspired Robotics introduces engineers to this area of study.
- The group of mechanical engineering seniors is the first University of Colorado Boulder team to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC) – an event in which future engineers are challenged to find a unique solution to a wind energy project.
- The department is remodeling its entryway in the Engineering Center - adding a new front desk, community center and dedicated career space. The renovations will give mechanical engineering community members another place to gather and provide students improved access to resources to achieve their academic and career goals.
- The racial reckoning in summer 2020 led to an awakening in our consciousness – a need for everyone to look inward and tackle our own unconscious biases. Professor Janet Tsai is asking students to question these preconceived notions when it comes to mechanical engineering as well.
- In case you missed it, watch the Dec. 16 ceremony from inside Macky Auditorium and view photos of the in-person event. Congratulations to all of the fall 2021 University of Colorado Boulder Engineering graduates!
- From bicycles and scooters to mock race cars and firetrucks, drill-powered vehicles built by Component Design students zoomed around Kittredge Pond in fall 2021 for the first time since the pandemic began.
- Those with a love for coffee can find their place in MCEN 4228/5228: Design of Coffee. The course shows junior, senior and graduate-level students how to use their training to solve problems outside the traditional engineering field by roasting and brewing coffee.
- Will Edgar, the first recipient of the CU Mechanical Engineering Student/Tuck Bridge Scholarship, has always had a knack for mechanical engineering. It is now complemented by a solid understanding of business thanks to the generosity of a fellow Buff.
