Linguistics incrementA recent article in the Washington Post pointed to a pervasive trend of regret among liberal arts majors, half of whom wish that they had chosen a different major. For the past decade, students have been increasingly focused on a major that they believe will provide better lifetime job prospects, particularly in the STEM subjects, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and who subsequently believe that they made the right major choice. As a result, enrollment in humanities and social science majors, such as history, art, philosophy and English, has plunged during the same period.Ìý

But within this somewhat dismal picture for liberal arts programs, is the fact that, at the same time, linguistics is one of two social sciences majors which has bucked the downward trend of the past decade and has increased its number of graduates.Ìý
