Old Main-Structural and Exterior Repairs

As part of the consent agenda at its regular meeting held at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs this week, the University of Colorado Board of Regents approved a $14.3 million restoration of Old Main, including structural, site and sustainability upgrades that help ensure ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ first building can continue its rich legacy of supporting student success for decades to come.

February, 2025:

It was decided that the 3rd floor of Old Main would be repurposed for use by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Arts and Sciences Advancement Team. As a result, the Heritage Center will not be returning to the 3rd floor when the renovation is complete. The Heritage Center is working with Facilities Management to find a new physical home on campus. While the museum is closed to the public, the staff are working diligently on collections, cultivating stories for the university's 150th celebration, and are available for research requests and artifact donations.

November, 2024:

  • Exterior repairs, replacements, and work continue on brick and sandstone.
  • Several issues have been discovered through the course of work which has caused a delay in project completion.
  • Extra repairs and updates include replacing worn stone pieces above windows and doors, filling gaps in the brick walls, rebuilding chimneys with damaged mortar, reinforcing structures, and removing asbestos from window caulking.
  • Interior demolition for temporary shoring installation has started. This will support the roof beam above the south wall during repairs which will allow the removal of the exterior steel shoring.
  • Final stage of the project will be rework of the drainage and grading around the building, and new landscaping.Ìý

June, 2024: Restoration work on the brick and sandstone continues. Design is underway for temporary shoring inside the building that will allow for removal of the temporary exterior shoring, structural repair work and brick replacement.Ìý

February, 2024: Restoration work on the brick and sandstone is underway.

January 23, 2024: The spiral stairs on the east side of the building are being removed between Jan. 15 and Feb. 2. They were added as fire escapes during a renovation in the 1980s and have deteriorated to an unsafe condition.

August 17, 2023:ÌýAhead of the 2024 Old Main preservation project, a contractor extracted two large bee hives from within buttresses on the northwest and southeast corners of the building. The goal of the extraction was to ensure the building is structurally sound and for the exterior to be an element-proof system.

August 10, 2023:ÌýThe brick, sandstone and subsurface investigations are wrapped up. We learned a lot and have been able to refine the design. The two biggest findings:

  • We believe the window sashes are original, based on the craftsmanship, joining and the fact that the wood is old growth. So rather than building new sashes we’ll restore as many as possible.
  • The mortar joints on the sandstone base are all in bad shape and only a few of the original beaded joint details have survived the years. We believe we have a strategy to repair the joints and reconstruct the beaded joints.
