Boulder resident聽Jim Kasic聽(EngrPhys鈥89, MChemEngr鈥93) is president and CEO of Boulder-based Sophono Inc. The company has received federal approval for its new Otomag Alpha 1 Bone Conduction Hearing System. It is designed for patients with conductive hearing loss and replaces the functions of that part of the ear. Magnetic discs hold the device in place, eliminating the need for a titanium abutment.

After 18 years with clothing company The Territory Ahead,聽Matthew Cooper聽(IntlBus鈥89) launched Carbon2Cobalt, a Santa Barbara-based men鈥檚 clothing company. He oversees all aspects of the business, from design and manufacturing to marketing. His line is about trying 鈥渢o blend rugged with refined鈥 in casual clothes, he told the聽Santa Barbara News-Press聽in a feature earlier in the year. He lives with his wife and children in Mission Canyon, Calif.

The Colorado Health Foundation appointed聽Vicky Powell Cavanaugh聽(Econ鈥89) as vice president of operations. She oversees grants management, information technology, office administration, facilities and human resources. Before joining the foundation she led strategic initiatives at such companies as McKesson, Pacificare, Qwest, Conoco and Gates Corp. The Denver resident also ran her own consulting firm, Cavanaugh Consulting.

He still works for the winery in addition to starting his own company, Buscador Wine, which can be found at buscadorwine.com. He lives in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Vice president of Southwest Research Institute聽Alan Stern聽(PhDAstro鈥89) is leading a program at the institute to enable researchers to fly in space on Virgin Galactic and XCOR Aerospace suborbital rockets in 2013 or 2014. He writes he will be among the flyers and will make at least four trips to space. He has been at the institute since 1991 and lives in Longmont, Colo.

New York Times聽箩辞耻谤苍补濒颈蝉迟听John Branch聽(Mktg鈥89, MJour鈥96) won the Pulitzer Prize in feature writing in spring for writing 鈥淪now Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek鈥 project. ASNE honored 鈥淪now Fall鈥 as part of its awards for the best journalism of 2012. The American Society of News Editors said the project 鈥渟ets a new standard for online storytelling.鈥 John visited campus in February to talk to journalism classes, faculty and staff. This summer聽Peter Vik聽(MPsych鈥89, PhD鈥92) will move to Pacific University in Oregon to work as professor and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology. Previously he was a professor at Idaho State University and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego. In February his book聽Regression, ANOVA, and the General Linear Model: A Statistics Primer聽was published.

Larry took on various committee roles and his knowledge of the university systems and processes was incredibly helpful. After graduating from CU鈥檚 journalism school聽Eric Vanderpool鈥檚 (Jour鈥89) first job was working for Caesars Resort and Casino in South Lake Tahoe, Nev. Eric served as the property鈥檚 chief copywriter, writing hotel brochures and newsletters and doing special event advertising. After moving to San Francisco and working for a marketing firm, Eric graduated from UCLA law school in 1996. He worked as a litigation attorney in Los Angeles before moving to San Francisco 14 years ago to continue litigating.

In July attorney聽Patrick Casey聽(PolSci鈥89) joined Fox Rothschild as partner. In July the company merged with Denver law firm Lottner Rubin Fishman Saul. Patrick represents builders, vendors, developers, general contractors, owners and design professionals in all aspects of construction and real estate matters. He has experience in major litigation, having resolved a host of disputes through negotiation, litigation and arbitration. Patrick lives in Denver.

He is business and city editor of the聽New Hampshire Union Leader聽and writes a weekly business column for the聽New Hampshire Sunday News, the state鈥檚 largest newspaper. In Colorado Michael worked as business and city editor of the BoulderDaily Camera, editor of聽ColoradoBiz聽magazine and adjunct instructor in the journalism and mass communication at CU-Boulder.

In January former Alumni Association board member聽Larry Drees聽(PolSci鈥89, ExecMBA鈥03, MMgmt鈥09) and聽Martha Shernick聽(Fren鈥79) were two alums who won the CU-Boulder Chancellor鈥檚 2013 Employee of the Year award. Larry of Longmont, Colo., is Buff OneCard program director and assistant director of Housing and Dining Services IT. He helped wire residence rooms with high-speed infrastructure, which was a key factor in CU鈥檚 ranking as the 28th most wired campus nationwide in 2000. Martha is residence hall program coordinator for Sewall Hall. She lives in Longmont, Colo.

After serving as chief counselor and director general of investment at the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency,聽Khalid Alsweilem聽(PhDEcon鈥89) was appointed a non-resident fellow at Harvard Kennedy School鈥檚 Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He will focus on the study of sovereign wealth funds, in particular Saudi Arabia鈥檚 reserve sovereign funds. Khalid lives in Houston.
