Cary, Professor of Physics, University of Colorado Boulder, and CEO, Tech-X Corporation Self-consistent electromagnetic modeling with boundaries The difficulty in modeling electromagnetics is in choosing the correct algorithm from the plethora available. The choice ultimately depends on what is most critical for the problem to be solved. Important issues include absence of any loss due to numerics, long-time stability, elimination of global solves, and accurate representation of boundaries. This talk will discuss the use of finite-difference time-domain methods with embedded boundaries with particle-in-cell methods. These methods will be reviewed, with special attention to the use of embedded boundaries to obtain accuracy. The use of Richardson extrapolation to circumvent the need for higher-order boundary algorithms will also be discussed. Applications to computations for accelerator cavities will be shown. In these calculations, one is able to obtain frequencies to a few parts in 105, which is almost as accurate as they can be measured. |
